Sheffield At the court baron of the manor held there on the 18th day of December in the reign of King George (early 1700s) before John Barr, steward At this court there came John Marshall, son and heir of Thomas Marshall, deceased, and he represented a certain surrender (a legal transfer) made by the said Thomas Marshall before his death, By that surrender, Thomas Marshall had placed into the hands of the Lord of the Manor All his messuages, cottages, lands, tenements and hereditaments lying in the manor of Sheffield previously in the occupation of Edward Ridge, John Houlden and others This surrender was made in consideration of a lawful some of money paid by Thomas Hollis of London, gentleman to the said Thomas Marshall during his lifetime It was further declared that - The lands and premises were to be regranted to the use of Thomas Hollis, his heirs and assigns forever Now the said John Marshall (the son) prayed that the said surrender should be admitted and entered upon the court rolls Whereupon the Lord of the Manor, through his steward, admits that Thomas Hollis to the property, to hold of the Manor by ancient rents, duties, and services owed And the said Thomas Hollis paid the customary fine for admittance and performed the required fealty (oath of loyalty) Signed J Batt, Steward (and witnesses) |
