The deposition of Henry Wainwright of Dungworth, Storrs in the parish of Bradfield in the County of York, yeoman, taken before Thomas Wentworth, William Rokeby, John Malinder and William West esquires by virtue of his Majesty's Commission for Charitable uses, to them and others directed at Rotherham in the County of York the first day of June AD 1615 Henry Wainwright of Dungworth, Storrs in the parish of Bradfield aforesaid in the County of York aged a hundred years or thereabouts sworn says and deposits as follows: That he heard his father say that one Spurret gave to the church of Bradfield a house and two crofts containing by estimation 6 acres lying in Stannington half bierlow in the parish of Bradfield paying out some money for the paving of certain lanes in Bradfield parish aforesaid and, has being Churchwarden of Bradfield about fifty years ago, he did in the right of the church there let to Vicar Tyas of Bradfield one house next unto the church yard for 6/8 yearly rent who placed therein one Sir Thomas Tynmouth his curate. And that afterwards the said vicar placed in the same house one Thomas Collie, curate to the said Vicar Tyas. And he further says that the said Vicar Tyas paid yearly for divers years together to the Churchwardens of the parish of Bradfield to the use of the whole parish 6/8 yearly but how the church came by this house or by whose gift he knows not for that it was out of his time. And he further deposits that one old house next but one unto the aforesaid house was about fourscore years ago new builded at the common charges of the inhabitants of Bradfield for placing of parish clerks therein which now is in the occupation of one Edward Hudson. And he further says that about fifty years ago being Churchwarden of Bradfield he received at he hands of one Margaret Shaw, widow, a yearly rent for one close in Dungworth called St Mary's Croft and for one dole of ley called Lady's Dole and other land which he knows not to the use of the church of Bradfield all which lands she held by lease from the then Churchwardens of Bradfield aforesaid Examined by Robert Royston - Clerk to the Commissioners |
